The BBC has commissioned a two-part documentary series exploring the career and legacy of “polarising” Harry Potterauthor J.K. Rowling.

The first part of the J.K. Rowling documentary series will look at the author’s “bookish childhood” and the creation of the Harry Potter series. “As the books inspired a generation of outsiders and brought millions of young fans together through the emerging internet, Rowling created a universe with an economic legacy worth billions,” explains a press release.

Meanwhile the second episode will explore her post-Harry Potter career. “Amid the rise of social media and intensifying culture wars, her interventions on Scottish independence, feminism, free speech and gender identity place her at the centre of increasingly bitter online exchanges.”

The documentary will feature archive interviews with Rowling and, while she’s aware the show is being made, she isn’t involved in its creation. It’s set to premiere next year, after the launch of HBO’s new Harry Potter adaptation.

“J.K. Rowling is arguably one of the most influential figures in the literary and wider media worlds. Through the extraordinary story of her life and work, this series explores not only the creation of a global phenomenon, but also how Britain’s culture has been shaped by significant social and technological changes in recent years,” said BBC Scotland’s commissioning editor David Harron.

“J.K. Rowling has achieved extraordinary literary success, with her influence spanning a generation of fans, crossing into cinema and the online world. [This documentary] explores her unique story from her early days as a writer to the present moment and how her unflinching personal beliefs have sparked a fraught and divisive dialogue that continues to this day,” added executive producer James Rogan.

The announcement comes after the BBC was accused of “trans rights censorship” after they blurred out the pro-trans slogan ‘Protect The Dolls’ from a t-shirt worn by House Of The Dragons’ Bethany Antonia during an episode of Strictly Come Dancing over weekend. A BBC spokesperson defended the decision, claiming “appropriate steps are [always] taken to reduce the inclusion of any overt branding or slogans that may be present, regardless of the wording or statement in question.”

At Reading Festival 2026, Loyle Carner criticised J. K Rowling during his set, which also saw him call out “toxic masculinity” and the far right. Earlier that month, Nicholas Hoult was criticised for joining the cast of HBO’s Harry Potter series. “It’s a shame to see him working on something that will benefit anti LGBT+ groups,” wrote one fan. A week later, it was announced that Hoult was stepping down from the role due to “scheduling conflicts” and will be replaced by Kit Harrington.

Several other cast members have distanced themselves from Rowling’s views on trans people, with Petunia Dursley actor Bel Powley saying she “strongly disagrees” with Rowling. “I think that the trans community deserve safety and dignity and respect and total acceptance.”

John Lithgow, who is playing Albus Dumbledore, said he considered leaving the project after receiving criticism but ultimately chose to stay. He has described Rowling’s views as “ironic and inexplicable”, while saying the books themselves are “clearly on the side of the angels, against intolerance and bigotry”.

Nick Frost, who is portraying Rubeus Hagrid, said his opinions “don’t align in any way, shape or form” with Rowling’s and Severus Snape actor Paapa Essiedu signed an open letter calling for the UK entertainment industry to protect trans rights.
